A clean strand schedule preserves each point where cable terminates or changes from level to stair geometry.
Separate every termination
Record each end-to-end cable section independently. A corner, end post, opening, or level-to-stair transition begins another cable path.
Group only identical paths
If several sections have the same measured cable path and row count, combine them with the identical-sections field.
Count one strand per row
Multiply cable rows by identical sections. Each current run kit supplies one pre-cut cable strand for one cable row.
Start a new measurement at every change in cable path
These common layout conditions should remain visible in the takeoff instead of being absorbed into one combined length.

How do I calculate cable railing strand quantities?
Multiply the cable rows by the number of identical termination-to-termination sections. Eleven rows across three identical sections requires 33 individual cable strands.
What pre-cut cable lengths are currently available?
Our current standalone black and stainless cable product options are listed in one-foot increments from 1 through 60 feet. Confirm current availability on the product page before ordering.
Should I round a measured cable path up or down?
For early planning, this calculator rounds up to the next listed whole-foot length. Final selection must follow the measuring and cut instructions for the exact fitting, because the field dimension and finished cable cut dimension are not automatically interchangeable.
Does a cable railing corner use one continuous strand?
Our current run-kit pages define a run as one cable row and state that it terminates at a corner or end post. Count and measure the next section separately.
Can level and stair cable paths be grouped together?
No. A level-to-stair transition starts another section and uses a different fitting family. Measure and schedule level and stair paths separately.
Does each cable railing run kit include cable?
Yes. Our current level and stair run kits for wood and metal posts each include one pre-cut 1/8-inch, 1x19 construction cable strand for one cable row.
What if my measured cable path is longer than 60 feet?
The current standalone pre-cut range shown on our product pages does not cover a path longer than 60 feet. Verify the layout and contact us before selecting cable or changing termination locations.
