Count the starts and stops

What counts as a separate cable section?

For ordering, think about where each group of straight, parallel cables begins and ends. Each cable row in that section needs its own matching kit.

Straight end

A termination post ends the section. The next disconnected railing area is counted separately.

Corner

When the railing changes direction at a corner, count the next side as another independent section.

Level to stair

A stair or ramp uses articulating stair fittings, so the angled portion is separate from the level portion.

Opening

Gates, breaks, and other openings interrupt the cable path and create a new start and stop.

Plan corners for your post material

The section-count formula is the same for wood and metal termination posts, but the attachment details and matching kit are different.

Wood post corners

Choose the wood-post version of each level or stair kit. Protectors can help shield wood where cable passes through or changes direction; final drilling and post reinforcement depend on the project.

  • Use level kits for horizontal sections.
  • Use stair kits for angled stair or ramp sections.
  • Confirm the cable path before drilling corner posts.

Metal post corners

Choose the metal-post version of each kit. Corner posts can carry cable attachments from more than one direction, so hole placement and available thread engagement must be planned together.

  • Keep each direction in its own section count.
  • Match level and articulating fittings to the run type.
  • Review the complete post and fitting layout before ordering.

Cable railing corner FAQs

Does a cable railing corner start a new section?

Yes. For kit planning, each turn at a corner ends one straight cable section and begins another. Count both sides independently.

How many kits do I need per section?

You need one matching kit for every cable row in every independent section. For example, two level sections with 11 cable rows require 22 Level Run Kits.

Is a stair section counted separately from the deck?

Yes. The level portion uses Level Run Kits and the angled stair or ramp portion uses Stair Run Kits with articulating fittings.

Can one corner post serve two railing directions?

A shared corner post may be part of the structural layout, but the cable on each direction is still counted as a separate section. Confirm the post, hole, and fitting arrangement before ordering.

Does this calculator determine code compliance?
