Match the fitting to the cable path
A level run is horizontal. A stair or ramp run needs an articulating fitting that aligns with the slope. Treat the transition between them as a new cable section.

Confirm the wood-post structure first
Cable creates tension at the termination posts. Hardware selection should follow the actual structure, attachment path, railing geometry, and local requirements.
Post size
Our direct-post wood kits specify typical 4x4 posts or larger. Confirm that the selected post and mounting details suit the project.
Attachment path
Identify whether the lag enters a wood post directly or must pass through drywall, sheathing, or siding to reach framing.
Run transitions
Mark corners, end posts, openings, and level-to-stair changes. Each termination-to-termination cable path is a separate section.
Local requirements
Confirm railing height, openings, post spacing, fastening, and other requirements with the authority responsible for the project location.
Measure, assemble, then tension
This overview follows our level wood-post kit workflow. Use the complete instructions for the exact kit and finish before installation.
Install the lag screws
Start the hanger bolt by hand, then use a 7/16-inch wrench to seat it according to the product instructions.
Assemble the first cable end
Slide the threaded stud onto the cable, place the jaws with about 1/8 inch of cable exposed, and pull the stud over the jaws until they lock.
Connect the fitting
Thread the cable assembly into the fitting body by hand. Follow the product instructions for minimum thread engagement.
Measure and cut the opposite end
Pull the cable to the opposite fitting, mark it as directed in the kit instructions, make a clean cut, and assemble the second end.
Tension from the middle outward
Hold the cable steady with cable-gripping pliers and turn the fitting with a 7/16-inch wrench. Begin with the middle row and alternate above and below it.

Keep the fittings accessible
Wood can shrink or shift as conditions change. That movement may reduce cable tension even when the cable and fitting remain serviceable.
Inspect posts and mounting points
Check for movement, splitting, loose attachments, or other damage before increasing cable tension.
Compare cable rows
Look for noticeable tension differences and confirm that cable spacing remains consistent across the section.
Re-tighten in a balanced order
If the structure is sound, use a 7/16-inch wrench and work from the middle cable outward, alternating above and below.
