We sell one cable diameter: 1/8 inch. Our railing cable uses 1x19 construction and 316 stainless steel. Choose stainless or black oxide finish; both use the same nominal cable diameter.

Identify 1/8-inch cable beside other sizes
We sell 1/8-inch cable. The larger sizes below are shown only for comparison and identification. A 3/16-inch cable has a nominal diameter 50% larger than 1/8 inch; a 1/4-inch cable has twice the nominal diameter. These are not strength or allowable-load ratios.

Start with the fitting specification
Our stainless level tensioner lists 1/8-inch, 1x19 cable. A thicker wire is not a drop-in upgrade for that fitting. Confirm the exact product rather than choosing cable size independently.
Keep nominal and measured size separate
3 mm and 1/8 inch are not the same nominal size: 1/8 inch converts to 3.175 mm. Do not treat a rounded metric label as evidence that the cable meets a fitting's specification.
What does 1x19 mean?
Nineteen wires, one strand
1x19 describes a strand made from 19 wires. It is different from 7x7 construction, which has 49 wires arranged in seven strands. The same outside diameter does not make these constructions interchangeable.
Our cable is listed as 1x19. A cable's construction designation is separate from its length, material grade and the number of rows in a railing.

Stainless cable
Our stainless cable is listed as 316 stainless steel. The word "stainless" alone does not identify an alloy, so check the grade on an existing cable's documentation.

Our black cable is also 316 stainless steel, with a black oxide patina finish. Black color alone does not identify that finish; a plastic-jacketed cable is a different product description.

What size cable does your railing hardware use?
The cable products covered here list 1/8-inch, 1x19, 316 stainless steel wire. Check the exact run kit or fitting for its requirements; this is not a universal specification for all brands.
Is 3/16-inch cable better than 1/8-inch cable?
Diameter alone cannot answer that. A suitable cable must match the fitting and complete railing design. The fact that 3/16 inch is larger does not mean it can replace 1/8-inch cable in our listed fitting.
Can I use 7x7 or 7x19 wire with a 1x19 fitting?
Do not assume interchangeability because the diameter matches. Those construction labels differ from the published 1x19 specification. Confirm the exact cable-and-fitting combination with the manufacturer before substituting.
Can I identify 316 stainless steel from a photograph?
A photograph is not material certification. Use the supplier's specification, product identification or material documentation. An unknown alloy remains unconfirmed in this checker.
Does a specification match mean my railing meets code?
No. The checker compares selected product descriptions only. It does not evaluate cable condition, fitting tolerances, posts, mounting, rail height, spacing, loads or local requirements.
What should I confirm before replacing existing cable?
Identify the fitting manufacturer and model, cable specification, termination details and required cut length. Have damaged components or an uncertain installation assessed before reuse. Contact us with product details when the match is unclear.
