This checklist organizes product installation preparation. It does not approve structural design, substitute for the fitting instructions, or determine compliance with local building requirements.
How the cable end goes together
Our swageless fitting uses a mechanical jaw instead of a hydraulic crimp. Follow the current fitting instructions for dimensions and tool sizes, then use this sequence as your installation overview.
Cut the cable cleanly
Make a clean, square cut so the wire strands can enter the stud-and-jaw assembly without fraying.
Slide on the stud
Put the smaller end of the threaded stud onto the cable first, leaving the larger opening toward the cut end.
Place the jaws
Push the jaws onto the cable and leave approximately 1/8 inch of cable exposed at the end.
Lock the assembly
Pull the threaded stud firmly back over the jaws until the assembly seats with a distinct click.
Add the washer
Place the Delrin plastic washer onto the threaded stud assembly before connecting it to the fitting body.
Connect, then tension
Thread the assembly into the fitting body by hand. Install all rows before applying final tension in the specified order.
Prepare for clean cuts and controlled tension
The fittings are swageless, so no hydraulic swaging machine is required. A few purpose-matched hand tools make the cable preparation and tensioning steps much cleaner.

Wood and metal posts use different fitting details
The cable preparation principle stays the same, but the post connection, hole dimensions, and tensioning tool depend on the exact fitting.
Wood post installation
Use the wood-post version of the Level Run or Stair Run Kit. The lag or hanger connection mounts into the wood structure rather than passing through a metal post wall.
- Follow the fitting drawing for pilot-hole and attachment details.
- Use articulating lag fittings for stair and ramp sections.
- Plan protector sleeves where cable passes through or could bear against wood.
Metal post installation
Use the metal-post version of the selected kit. The fitting body and post hole must match the dimensional drawing for the chosen level or articulating stair fitting.
- Verify post size and fitting clearance before drilling.
- Match level fittings to horizontal cable sections.
- Match articulating stair fittings to angled sections.
Start in the middle and alternate outward
Install all cable rows before applying final tension. Begin with the middle cable, then alternate one row above and one row below as you work toward the outside. Repeat the sequence until the system is evenly tensioned and secure.
Hold the cable steady with gripping pliers while turning the fitting so the wire does not spin.
Wear powder-free gloves. After installation, hand-rinse with a damp lint-free cloth, then use a fresh lint-free cloth to apply Boeshield T-9 as described in our current care instructions.

Do Keuka cable fittings require a swaging tool?
No. Our fittings are swageless and use a mechanical jaw that assembles by hand. You still need appropriate cable-cutting, gripping, drilling, and tensioning tools for the project.
What tools should I prepare for cable railing installation?
Prepare a cutter that makes clean, square cable cuts, cable gripping pliers, the drill equipment required by your posts, and the wrench or hex key specified for each selected fitting. Review the current fitting instructions before starting.
Should I fully tension each cable as I install it?
No. Install all cable rows first. Then begin final tensioning at the middle and alternate above and below the center as you work outward.
Are wood-post and metal-post cable fittings interchangeable?
No. Select the kit designed for your termination post material and run type. Wood-post fittings use lag-style connections, while metal-post fittings use hardware and hole details designed for metal posts.
Do stairs and ramps use the same fittings as level runs?
No. Stair and ramp sections use articulating stair fittings that pivot to match the cable angle. Horizontal sections use level fittings.
How should black oxide cable and fittings be handled?
Use powder-free gloves during handling and installation. Follow our black oxide care instructions for wiping the installed parts and applying the recommended protective product.
Does this checklist confirm that my railing meets code?
No. The checklist helps organize product installation. Structural design, guard height, post spacing, cable spacing, mounting conditions, and local code must be confirmed for the specific project.
