    Why the tightening order starts near the middle

    Our installation sequence starts with the middle cables, then alternates above and below while moving outward.

    Seat every cable first

    Complete the fitting assembly and bring every cable to the hand-tight stage before applying final tension.

    Begin at the center

    Start with the central row or central pair. The interactive diagram numbers the remaining rows from that midpoint.

    Alternate toward the edges

    Move above and below the center in sequence, repeating the process until the complete section is rigid and secure.

    Before turning a fitting

    Inspect the complete railing section

    Cable tension is carried by the posts and their attachments. A loose or damaged structure should be corrected before re-tensioning.

    Check posts and anchors

    Look for movement, loose fasteners, splitting, corrosion, deformation, or other damage at termination and intermediate posts.

    Confirm the cable assembly

    Verify that each swageless jaw and threaded connection is assembled according to the instructions for the installed fitting.

    Keep the cable from spinning

    Use cable-gripping pliers where directed while the fitting is turned. Use clean, suitable tools around finished surfaces.

    Watch the whole section

    Apply tension gradually and monitor posts, anchors, fittings, spacing, and cable alignment throughout the sequence.

    Black oxide finish: Follow our current black-finish handling, cleaning, and protection instructions. Avoid assuming that care methods for unfinished stainless are interchangeable with black oxide.

    What order should cable railing be tightened?

    How tight should cable railing be?

    Our current fitting specifications list an approximate tension setting of 225 pounds. The planner above does not measure force, so use the current instructions and an appropriate verification method for the installed system.

    What tool tensions a metal-post level fitting?

    Our current metal-post level fitting specifies a 3/16-inch Allen wrench or hex bit. Hold the cable with cable-gripping pliers to prevent it from spinning while final tension is applied.

    What tool tensions a wood-post fitting?

    Our current level and stair fittings with lag for wood posts specify a 7/16-inch wrench. The fitting body remains accessible for later adjustment when the post structure is sound.

    Can cable railing be re-tensioned later?

    Our adjustable swageless fittings can be re-tightened. Inspect posts, anchors, cable, and fittings first, then follow the current instructions for the exact installed hardware.

    Should all cables be installed before final tensioning?

    Yes. Complete the cable and fitting assemblies and bring the rows to the instructed hand-tight stage before following the center-out final tensioning order.
